Should You Apply for a Secured Loan

What to consider before you enter into
a secured loan contract

When you need money for a worthwhile purpose, a secured loan is the perfect way to do it. Since the loan is secured you will pay a lower rate of interest and probably have a longer repayment term but you need to look at some facts before you make a final decision.

Do You Really Need the Money?

Before you finalize any secured loan, ask yourself if this is something you really need. Taking a loan for frivolous purposes is courting financial disaster in the event something should happen later. You don’t want to borrow money just for the sake of borrowing - you want to have a good reason and one that is necessary.

For instance, don’t borrow money to buy a second car to have “just in case.” If you cannot depend upon the one you have it’s time to look at replacing it. On the other hand, if you need a second car because your spouse has gone back to work and needs transportation, you have a good reason.

Can You Afford the Payments?

Before you borrow money you need to make sure you can afford to make the payments. Even if you have a good reason for taking out a secured loan but you know you can’t afford the payments, you don’t want to do it. If you can’t make the payments, you will lose any collateral you pledged to secure the loan and it will go on your credit history as repossession.

If you can afford the payments you will find this type of loan has the lowest interest rate and possibly the lowest repayment term. A signature loan has a higher interest rate because it carries more risk for the lender than a collateralized loan does.

Only Borrow the Amount of Money You Need

It can be tempting to borrow extra money in order to do other things with the proceeds from your secured loan but you have to remember you are paying interest on the money you borrow, so it is not a good financial decision to borrow more than what you need.

You want to keep within your budget but you also want to make certain you don’t pay interest on money you are only going to use to buy things you don’t need. For example, if you need £3,000 don’t borrow £5,000 just to “make it even” and use the money to pack your savings account because you will be paying more in interest on the loan than you will receive from the bank.

The financial decisions you make will determine your financial future, so you want to remember that when you borrow money. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and want to borrow more than what you need or borrow money you don’t really need or can’t afford, but you want to avoid those pitfalls. When you need to borrow money for a specific purpose, a collateralized loan is an excellent choice but don’t use it to meet every day expenses or buy luxuries you can’t afford.
