Getting Started with a
Secured Personal Loan
Looking for a secured personal loan
For the newcomer to credit a secured personal loan can help
you begin to build your credit file. If you’re a recent college graduate looking to buy a new car or your first
home, you can begin building a credit history.
You want to learn what some lenders may expect of you and whether you can
even hope to buy whatever it is you seek.
What is your employment potential?
If you are a recent graduate and just beginning your employment, secured
personal loan lenders are not going to expect you to have the longevity that they expect from the average consumer.
However, before they approve your application for a secured personal loan, they will be looking at your potential
for continued employment with your company. Some of the things a lender may want to know include the
following:
• Are you working in your desired field? If not, does your present company
offer positions in your field?
• Do you plan to stay with your current employer into the future?
• What is your potential for advancement?
• What is the financial condition of the company?
• What are your chances for continued employment?
Have you had any kind of credit?
Although you may not have had a bank loan, if you have any credit cards or
have rented an apartment while you were in college, these are important items to let the lender know. Anything that
may show the lender you are financially responsible will work in your favour and help the lender in his decision to
approve your application for a secured personal loan. You want to show the lender that you
are financially responsible and stable in spite of your limited or non-existent credit experience. Things such as
bank accounts are also very helpful in proving your financial stability.
What is the purpose of the loan?
Even though your application is for a secured
personal loan, lenders tend to question young people who apply for credit for frivolous reasons. Your lack of
credit experience will make the lender think seriously about whether to approve the loan if you apply for luxury
items. For example, a car may be necessary or at least acceptable but be reasonable in your request. Even if you
have your heart set on a brand new sports car, be willing to compromise and buy something less sporty for the first
time. If you’re looking to buy your first home, keep in mind that this will probably not be your last purchase, so
choose a good starter home, especially if you are single.
Are you financially able to make the payments?
Whether you can make the payments on a loan is the most important question
the lender is going to ask himself. You may feel you can afford it, but the lender has certain criteria he must
evaluate to determine your debt to income ratio. Even with no credit the lender will consider certain items such as
rent, fuel, taxes, and other items that are mandatory. You must qualify under the lender’s guidelines in order to
be approved for your secured personal loan.
