Avoiding a Common Pitfall
of Debt Consolidation Loans
Select your debt consolidation loans carefully
Debt consolidation loans are advantageous for those looking
to reduce monthly payments in order to ease their financial burden. Sometimes people become too comfortable after
consolidating their loans and make one very common mistake that puts them right in the same position they were
initially. Anyone who has fallen into this trap knows exactly what we mean and can attest to how easy it is to
do.
The credit card trap and debt consolidation loans
When you look at your financial situation and determine you are in need of
debt consolidation loans, you also need to make the decision to get rid of your credit
cards. If you do a great deal of business travelling, you may choose to set one card aside for that purpose, but
the others should be cancelled or at the very least locked away until you are in a financial position to be able to
use them minimally. Many people make the mistake of consolidating debts only to begin the cycle all over again by
using their credit cards in the same manner they did before they took the loan. It is a common trap into which many
people fall, but if you make the decision to discontinue using the credit cards until your debt is paid, you will
be in a much better financial position.
Everything is an emergency
One of the most common excuses people make for continuing to use their credit
cards after they take out debt consolidation loans is that they had an
urgent need and didn’t have the cash. That is a common excuse and in many cases the truth is when you have credit
cards EVERYTHING is an emergency. There are very few people with enough self-control to only use their credit cards
when there’s an emergency. That certainly doesn’t mean they are non-existent, and you may indeed be one of those
people after you consolidate your debts, but in order to avoid temptation, cut up or lock up the credit cards until
you are in a better financial position. Even if you managed to lower your payment by a substantial amount with your
loan, it’s too easy to fall back into the same pattern of spending if you allow yourself the luxury of using your
credit cards.
Learn how to spend responsibly
Debt consolidation loans are a way to help people get out of
debt before they reach the point where they are forced into bankruptcy. As such you need to refrain from using any
credit cards until you have developed the habit of responsible spending. It is this lack of responsibility that put
you into a position that made it difficult to handle your loan and credit card payments, so continual use of credit
cards to make purchases or take cash advances will put you right back where you were before you consolidated your
debt. Unless you can trust yourself explicitly to only use a credit card for a dire emergency, do not use them at
all until your loan is paid in full.
